A magic hour light moment for the world

Not sure what to say about the US mid-term elections, but the past 24 hours couldn't go unblogged. This is Planet Earth's magic hour light moment. We get to feel the weight of Satan's cock lifted off our shoulder, step photogenically out into a perfectly timed sunset, and grin like loons. We get to know that many, many others around the world are doing the same.

I've been obsessively reading news even more than usual for the past two weeks. Made myself go to bed last night, heard the results finally at half six this morning. As Martin Kettle says, 'the cheering can be heard not just in America itself but around the planet.'

The Democrats have control of the House, and look likely to get the Senate (though this may be dragged out for a month.) Dear ol' Rumsfeld is out on his ear, to be replaced by an ex-CIA man who apparently had his mitts in the Iran-Contra affair. Larvely. Dubya is saying he looks forward to a 'new era of co-operation' with Democrats, 'setting aside partisan differences'. Hmm. That would be the same Bush who came to power on a hanging chad in 2000, declared he'd work for all Americans, and then did everything within his power to cement a neo-conservative new century, short of actually rounding up his opponents (which doubtless they were working towards)? Twat. Twat twatty twat twatt-atty twat twat TWAT! Oh - but poor wikkul bushy wushy wubya woo - he can no longer be Leader of Everybody. Aaaaw. The next two years are going to be one big, fat accountability moment. Hah!

We can hopefully look forward to some lovely investigations over the next two years - especially if the Senate swings Democrat, as looks most likely. (They'll be able to appoint Democrat chairs to every committee, for a start.)

An American President, ruling the last superpower on this or any other planet, and his party have been driven willy-nilly into global and domestic retreat a mere three-plus years after launching the invasion of their dreams, the one that was meant to start them on the path to controlling the planet...

... says Alternet, and I'd have to agree. A bunch of ideologues who've tried to do nothing less than build a world order 'conducive to American interests' through military might. These folk really, really believed that American interests, moral 'truth' and total military dominance were actually all the same God-given thing, and they were the ones to manifest it.

Shouldn't get too excited; just a corner turned. But for the past few days, I've been saying to myself:

Total foreign policy fuck-up; prominent neo-cons declare the Bush administration is incompetent (and ask Vanity Fair not to publish until after the election... tee hee!); prominent military magazine calls for Rumsfeld's resignation; several high-ranking Republican men - some, in public, evangelically homophobic - get caught fiddling with young boys... surely, for all that's good and true in this poor, desperate world of ours, they can't actually win, can they? Shit, can they? Oh God, they're probably going to win...

Now I'm just waiting for the first person to say to me, 'it doesn't actually matter: they're all the same anyway.' There's a fairly high chance I may murder them right then and there, cackling maniacally and rolling my eyes as I do.

I just hope some dreadful lies come to light before Blair gets chance to jump ship.

Oh, happy days... la ti ta ti ta ti ta...
